HIV ‘cannot be passed on while under treatment’
There is no risk of people passing HIV to a partner when they are receiving effective treatment, the HSE has officially said for the first time.
The move has been welcomed by campaigners. ACT UP Dublin, an advocacy group aimed at ending HIV in Ireland, said that the change to the health service’s information pages was the “strongest statement yet” supporting treatment for the virus.
The HSE has said that making treatment available for people with HIV not only allows them to live a “long and healthy life,” but that when “the treatment is working properly, there is in effect no risk that a person with HIV can pass on HIV to another person.” The statement is included in a revision to a web page on HIV and AIDS.
